I have never seen it mentioned, but I have to believe I am not the only one to have noticed. Specifically, a minor (ok, major) detail in two of the major battles of Tolkien’s works. The first being the Siege of Barad-dûr, and the second being the Battle of the Black Gate

The apostasy of those who I once looked up to is discouraging, but the spiritual abortions of those you love and have known from childhood provokes a genuine desire to weep. The church persevered through Lyon and the countless persecutions, it will continue to persevere.
